Scanned PDF to Markdown: convert, then check the result
Choose between Markdown and searchable PDF, then review OCR text, tables and page references against the original scan.
A scanned PDF gives you a picture of a page. Markdown gives you text you can reuse. OCR is the recognition step between the two—but a readable file is not proof that every word, table or number has survived correctly.
If your next task is research, a document knowledge base or preparing material for an AI assistant, Markdown can be more useful than repeatedly opening page images. If your goal is to keep the PDF and search inside it, a searchable-PDF tool may be a better fit.
Check whether OCR is needed
Try selecting a sentence and copying it into a plain-text editor. If you only select the page image, recognition is probably needed. If text copies but arrives in the wrong order, the problem may involve document layout or an unreliable existing text layer rather than simply missing text.
Do not judge the whole document from its first page. A report can contain ordinary digital text, scanned appendices and image-based tables. Check the pages that matter to your task.
Decide what the output must do
Choose Markdown when you need portable text with readable document structure. It is useful for editing notes, reviewing passages and providing source material to your own AI tools.
Choose a searchable PDF when preserving the document's visual appearance and searching within that same PDF are the main requirements. Choose a specialist extraction workflow when you need named database fields, validated calculations or cell-level records. These are different jobs; a JSON filename does not make them interchangeable.
JustOCR's published workflow provides Markdown, JSON with recognized text, and a preview for each page. Its current financial-statement example also illustrates why format details matter: tables can appear as HTML inside the Markdown file rather than pipe-separated Markdown tables.
Review a representative sample first
Include ordinary paragraphs and the difficult material: columns, small footnotes, dense tables and pages with weak contrast. Define success before processing the full set. For a research note, useful reading order may be the priority. For financial work, a correct-looking paragraph is little comfort if a year header has shifted above the wrong figures.
Review the recognized text alongside the original. Check headings, the sequence of paragraphs, table labels and anything that changes the meaning of a statement. Keep source filenames and page references with the text so that a later reviewer can return to the evidence.
Check tables separately from prose
A table may be readable in a browser while still needing work before it becomes a reliable spreadsheet. Confirm which figures belong to each row and year. Check blank entries, dashes, brackets, note references and unit labels.
An HTML table embedded in Markdown may render differently across editors. If you plan to import the result into another system, try the actual destination rather than assuming that all Markdown viewers handle tables the same way.

Use JSON for the structure it actually contains
JustOCR's public JSON example contains recognized text and blocks with labels and bounding boxes. Those block locations help describe page layout. They should not be described as individual table-cell coordinates, recognition confidence scores or validated financial fields.
Inspect the output before designing an import around it. If your process needs a record for each invoice field or financial line item, allow for a separate extraction and validation stage instead of assuming OCR has completed that work.
Keep the evidence when using AI
Giving Markdown to an AI assistant makes the document easier to consume; it does not certify the recognition or the assistant's answer. Retain the original, page references and your reviewed version. Ask for source-backed answers and check material conclusions against the document.
Start by reviewing JustOCR's published output description. Before paying for a larger batch, decide what must remain correct and how you will detect an error. The useful output is not the cleanest-looking text file—it is text you can confidently trace back and check.
Questions before converting
Will OCR make the PDF itself searchable? Not necessarily. Extracting Markdown and adding a searchable text layer to a PDF are different outputs. Confirm the service's deliverables.
Does JSON mean the table is ready for a database? No. Inspect the schema and the actual records. Page text and layout blocks are not the same as validated fields or cells.
Can I skip the original after conversion? Keep it for review and evidence, subject to your organization's storage rules. A conversion can omit or misread material that looks plausible in text.
